Finger Lakes Permaculture Sites Tour, Saturday September 6th

In Permaculture on August 31, 2014 at 2:20 pm

The Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute (FLPCI) presents the 1st annual Permaculture Tour, showcasing the burgeoning practice of permaculture design in our region.

The term “permaculture”–a contraction of the words permanent and agriculture–was coined by Australian Bill Mollison. FLPCI Instructor Rafter Ferguson sums it up in just seven words: Meeting human needs while increasing ecosystem health. The practice of permaculture in our region has inspired community cornerstones like Acorn Designs owner Steve Siergk who took a course in the 1980’s with Bill Mollison.

The Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute was founded in 2005 by Michael Burns, a New Roots Charter School teacher and activist, Karryn Olson-Ramanujan a professor of sustainability at Ithaca College and founder of the Permaculture Consulting Firm SEEDS and Steve Gabriel, local ecologist, educator and author of the just published book: Farming the Woods.

In recent years, the Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute is most known for its annual intensive 14-day Permaculture Design Courses held in August
at Cayuta Sun Farm near Cayuta Lake in Catharine, NY. Their Community Training in Ecological Design (CTED) course caters to the busy lives of local people with full time jobs and families. Classes are held during weekends and in the evenings once a week and participants apply their newly acquired knowledge to the design of their own properties.

The Permaculture Sites Tour seeks to encourage face-to-face networking and sharing of knowledge and experience of area permaculture practitioners and enthusiasts. The event is designed to provide people with concrete examples of permaculture methods and principles in action.

On Saturday, September 6th anyone interested in learning more about Permaculture can begin their exploration with tours of Permaculture farms, gardens, homes and organizations. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. site hosts will showcase examples of permaculture theory in practice. The tours, which are free and open to the public will culminate with a reception at the Ithaca Beer Company Beer Garden at 6:00pm. The Ithaca Beer Company Garden will be open for tours prior to the reception from 4-6p.m.

Event maps are available at fingerlakespermaculture.org. Printed copies will be located at the GreenStar West-End and Dewitt Mall locations. RSVPs are appreciated, but not required via: http://FingerLakesPermaculture.org
